SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical mountains of Sri Lanka. It's located in the Matale district near Dambulla town in the Central Province. Sigiriya is a very popular tourist destnaton. 

Sigiriya is also known as Lion Rock. In 1982, UNESCO named Sigiriya a World Heritage Site, and is considered the eighth wonder of the world. In 477 AD, King Kasyapa made his kingdom. Its height is 200 meters. The ruins of a royal palace can be seen on the top of the hill. 

It is considered to be one of the oldest existng gardens in the world. Even today, water fowers are in operaton there. Therefore, it is clear that he had good knowledge of water technology. The mirror wall found in Sigiriya is of special signifcance. 

The songs writen here are believed to have been composed in the 13th century. About 20 wall paintngs have been found in Sigiriya and these paintngs are used to show the beauty of women. These paintngs are similar to the Ajanta murals. Sigiriya is world famous because of the many things in Sigiriya.
